Uni-preneur's Dilemma: Balancing Academia and Influence

Balancing finding the motivation to go to my lectures, keep up with cheerleading training, have a social life, go back home to visit family and friends as well as finding the courage to dive head first into the freelancing world can be as overwhelming as reading this sentence. 🤯

My journey with entering the SMM freelancing world begun 3 years ago when I first started my course in Marketing and Management at Queen Mary University of London. I knew I wanted to be my own boss and work for myself because the idea that I could work anywhere, follow my own schedule and take holidays whenever I wanted to appealed to me SO much... but, I just didn't know how I'd get there.

Four* years ago @studentmmarketer was created.

This was my baby.

My passion project.

I decided to start this account on Instagram to document my journey learning all about social media managing as I knew NOTHING about it at all. All I knew is that I wanted to create my own little page to look back on and see how far I came when I eventually worked with a client. (Because it was inevitable that I would)! 👩‍💻

WOW!

I knew I had a date written down on my notion page for when I first started this and turns out it was FOUR YEARS AGO!

That's insane to me.

(Turns out I didn't need a medium page to write my blogs which is why you're seeing them on here:)

I can yap on all about my preparation for beginning @studentmmaketer but that will be in a future blog 👀

I was overwhelmed with doing uni and this as my 'side-hustle' - but not in the way you think.

Uni can be pretty stressful - I can say this whole heartedly as someone who left three 2000+ word essays until nights before - but that's fully on me!

I was overwhelmed with doing uni and this as my 'side-hustle' - but not in the way you think. Yes I was overwhelmed with the workload but also outreaching to clients was a hefty job for someone who was also doing a million other things. 💆‍♀️

It was my first time living away from home and being fully independent, which I COULDN'T wait for! For me, that meant having the freedom of living in London, meeting new people daily, going 'out-out' on a random Tuesday, sports night on the Wednesday, pub golf on the Thursday, cheer training on the Friday until 10pm and going out after that as a 'reward'.

Okay this makes me sound like a raging alcoholic but I'm just trying to paint a picture of a typical first year student week navigating her way through the uni experience. 😂

We've all heard about wanting to have that ✨uni✨ not university experience.

This on top of the regular lectures and seminars and trying to find a part-time job to sustain your newly found social life is draining enough when you're also lacking sleep. We've all heard about wanting to have that ✨uni✨ not university experience. And this is what I had.

Me being the person that I am wanting to do a everything at once, begun @studentmmarketer.

Yes, in the midst of all this chaos, obviously I didn't want any down-time, instead I thought let's build my empire 😍

Yes, I made plans and created the account and started posting my journey.

Was I consistent, no.

This project was an on and off progression and in the future I may share with you the post I made about my COMEBACK and starting FRESH.

That so called 'comeback' was 2 years ago...

Was that my comeback or was that me having a whim of motivation that in fact, didn't last.

I would suggest the latter.

My all time favourite quote is "you're always one decision away from a completely different life".

Do I sometimes stop and think to myself what could've been and where my brand would be right now if I had carried on with my initial page, 1000% - because of this quote. 💫

But despite all this, I wouldn't have wanted my journey to happen any other way because I learnt SO much across these years about myself and what it is I exactly want.

Whether you found that my story just kept adding more side quests as it went on, or if you were inspired or just amused by it, I would absolutely LOVE to hear about your guys' journey. 🚀

Because after all,

(I couldn't not end with this quote, this post was set up for it)

It's not about the destination, it's about the journey and what you learn along the way.
